Welcome to the
Canterbury Cemetery Friends

A community dedicated to the preservation of
Canterbury City Cemetery’s heritage and biodiversity.

The archway of Canterbury Cemetery’s main building topped with an elegantly lofty spire and flanked by twin ragstone chapels.

Canterbury is blessed with some splendid open spaces; these range from the spectacular formal parks like the Dane John and Westgate Gardens, to Bingley Island and Miller’s Island nature reserves and smaller gems such as the ‘Butterfly’ or ‘Three Cities’ gardens.

Just north of the city walls is another charming location — Canterbury City Cemetery. This extensive public area, which is equal to around 14 football pitches, is tucked away just off the busy Whitstable Road. Once inside its gates, you enter a tranquil place that’s happily far from the bustle of shoppers, tourists, and traffic.

The primary purpose of Canterbury City Cemetery is to provide a dignified setting for the remains of the deceased. It serves as a fitting place for people to mourn and remember those who rest among the symbolic tributes.

It’s a treasure that not only deserves to be preserved, but also enhanced, which is the main goal of the Canterbury Cemetery Friends. This group of volunteers has come together to bring the cemetery’s historical, cultural, educational, and recreational potential to the attention of a wider audience. The Friends also wish to enlist help from others in the community who seek to make the cemetery an even more wonderful place.
