Renovation plans

The Canterbury Cemetery Friends are in the process of developing plans to renovate the ragstone Remembrance Chapel, which was designed by Mr John Green Hall.

Since its completion in 1877, the chapel has never been put into service. Due to its current state, it is typically closed to the public.

Once renovated, the chapel could host many different types of cultural gatherings and community activities throughout the year.

The exterior of the chapel (pictured above) is in good condition, and the roof is sound.

The chapel has vast potential for becoming a multipurpose space that could be a valuable asset to Canterbury.

In conjunction with the Open Day on 21 September 2025, the chapel was cleared of debris so visitors could safely view certain areas. After seeing inside, they were asked to share their suggestions for the renovated space on notes that were posted on a board.

This feedback was posted under AI generated images that demonstrated how the post-renovation chapel might be used. These ideas (captured in the word cloud below) will be carefully reviewed and considered once the site is safely repaired and operational.

Generated by ChatGPT (AI), these images are based on the original photograph of the inside of the building. They capture how the chapel could be used for concerts, recitals, meetings, talks, lectures, town hall gatherings, readings, art and photography exhibitions, and many other community activities.

It’s easy to see that the space is very promising, although there is much work to do. Repair costs have been estimated, but funding has not yet been secured.
